How many Google calendars do you have?
Barbara Goleman Senior High School senior Hailie Prieto has five as she mentors hundreds of peers and manages her extra-curricular activities.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the Town of Miami Lakes have both shined a light on the Miami Lakes teenager for her leadership and community service.
Councilman Ray Garcia presented a Certificate of Recognition to Hailie, 17, during the Feb. 18 council meeting.
“You’ve worked hard all your life and you’ve earned your recognition,” Garcia said, describing her “remarkable contributions.”
Hailie is the student member of the Education Advisory Board and collaborated with eight schools in town to enhance educational opportunities and programs for future student leaders, her advisor Ana Soto-Gonzalez said.
As a Youth Activities Task Force member, she helped stage the Bike Rodeo & Safety Day, Movies at the Park, Nightmare on Montrose Halloween event and the Spring Fling Easter Egg Hunt and showed other kids how it’s done.
The aspiring lawyer is president of Goleman’s Law Honor Society. She organized the shoe drive to benefit Camillus House, and the Middle School Mock Trial Competition held at Goleman. She has also implemented training programs for future student officers in the society, Soto-Gonzalez said.
During the last three years, Hailie was deputy director of Virtutem Populo, Inc., a student-led nonprofit that promotes civic engagement among young people.
During the presentation at town hall, Hailie thanked Soto-Gonzalez, her parents, town staff and teachers and administrators at Goleman. For Virtutem Populo founder Maurits Acosta, she thanked him for his example of “how to lead and how to show others how to civically engage.”
