Miami Lakes canines and their owners have been eagerly wagging their tails awaiting the opening of the planned Miami Lakes off-leash dog recreation area to be located at 14048 Palmetto Frontage Road (N.W. 77 Court), scheduled to be opened in early 2016.

In anticipation of the opening, the Town is sponsoring a contest to select a name for the new recreation area.

Entries can be emailed to Jackie Calzadilla at calzadillaj@miamilakes-fl.gov with “Dog Park Name Contest” as the subject line. Submissions can also be sent the Town of Miami Lakes, Attn: Name the Dog Park Contest, 6601 Main Street, Miami Lakes, Florida.

Submission deadline is Tuesday, September 30 at 5 p.m.

The Grand Prize: The name of the new Dog Recreation area will be revealed at the ground breaking ceremony (to be scheduled at a later date) along with a commemorative plaque recognizing the winner’s creativity.

All entries will be judged by volunteers named by the Town and a winner will be chosen based on originality and uniqueness. The contest is open to all residents. Submissions are limited to one entry per person.

The proposed Dog Recreation area will feature both a passive recreational area and two separate fenced areas for smaller and larger dogs. The area will include benches, drinking fountains for the dogs, and a joint open air shelter for use by pet owners. In addition, the site incorporates a portion of the proposed 190-foot wide bike trail along the south side of Palmetto Frontage Road.
