American High’s ace softball players Kayleen Romero and Christy Velez signed on the dotted line two weeks ago to study and play softball for the Miami-Dade College Sharks.

The two girls are the proud products of the Miami Lakes Optimist Club softball program.

Romero and Velez played in the program since they were eight years old and advancing to play for the Optimist Club’s Miami Lakes Heat All-Star team, helping to bring numerous championships home, being coached by Alex Castroman, Ulisses Vazquez, Aldo Romero and Lissette Morales.

The Optimist club, their parents and the coaches couldn’t be prouder,” said Castroman. “Both Kayleen and Christy endured many early wake up calls to travel all over the state representing the Heat and Optimist Club.”

Castroman said the girls’ parents, Amanda and Aldo and Alfredo and Yvette are extremely proud of all the “hard work the girls have put in to receive the honor.”
