On January 22, the Town of Miami Lakes celebrated the unveiling of Madden’s Hammock artifacts that were recently returned from the University of Florida’s Museum of Natural History at the request of Vice Mayor Manny Cid.

Miami-Dade historian Robert Carr, one of the original archeologists involved in the Hammock excavation, provided a fascinating presentation about the historical background of Madden’s Hammock and explained the archeological significance of the artifacts that were excavated from the site.

“Madden’s Hammock is a historical gem within the Town of Miami Lakes,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton. “We are truly fortunate to have the opportunity to showcase artifacts from the site and share our town’s heritage with our youth. I encourage all residents to visit Town Hall and see these artifacts on display.”

Miami Lakes middle and senior high schools were invited to honor students who excel in the subject of history during the artifacts’ unveiling event.

Students who were recognized included:

Miami Lakes K-8 Center – Cassandra Casadevalle, Daniel James, Megan Rodriguez, Marc Rodriguez, Sofia Weintraub and Alexis Weintraub; Miami Lakes Middle School – Rey Fundora, Cristian Ochoa, Vanessa Pearson and Melanie Quintero; Bob Graham Education Center – Christina De Solo, Gabriela Flores, Grace Li, and Lauren Toledo; Barbara Goleman Senior High – Nathali Arenas, Gabriella Sallai and Danny Xie.
