Former HGHS basketball standout Gian Clavell signs with Mavericks

Former Hialeah Gardens High basketball standout Gian Clavell recently signed with the Dallas Mavericks after competing for the Miami Heat’s summer league teams in Orlando and Las Vegas.
He is the first Hialeah Gardens High alumni to play for an NBA team.

The 6-4, 185-pound undrafted rookie from Colorado State University, who was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, averaged 12.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 24.6 minutes in five games during summer league play.

Clavell, 23, also shot 45.2 percent (19-of-42) from the field, 40.6 percent (13-of-32) from three-point range and 91.7 percent (11-of-12) from the foul line.

At Colorado State, he shot a MWC-best 20.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 2.0 steals during the 2016-2017 season.

At Hialeah Gardens, he was named to the All-State Team after he led the Gladiators to the state championship in 2012.

Clavell also was a member of Puerto Rico’s National Team for the FIBA Americup this year.
Clavell joins Mavericks’ perennial All-Star Center Dirk Nowitzki and fellow Puerto Rican and Miami Christian High standout J.J. Barea.
